VERONICA MILNAR, TENNESSEE • Conference: TMTA is now offering for the first time, online registration to its membership

• Member Recognition: TMTA is saddened to announce that Dr. Jerry R. Perkins, a long time member of TMTA and MTNA and fellow colleague, lost his short battle with cancer on September 29, 2011. His local membership was with Middle Tennessee Music Teachers Association. During his tenure, he served as state president, local president, and Southern Division chair, Tennessee Teacher of the Year as well as concertized and published articles for his field for many years. For forty-two years he served as Professor of Music and serving as the head of the keyboard department at Middle Tennessee State University. A scholarship fund has been established in Jerry’s name. Donations can be sent to:
Jerry Perkins Memorial Scholarship Fund MTSU Foundation
PO Box 109
Murfreesboro, TN 37132
GABRIELLA RYAN, VIRGINIA • Conference: Oct. 27-30, 2011, Virginia Commonwealth University, Ann Schein, guest artist. We
doubled our attendance at our annual conferences the past 2 years by increasing our email advertising to monthly reminders, and by allowing registration by email and PayPal. We began our conference these past 2 years with an Opening Ceremonies Member Recital, including flowers and balloons.
• Activities and Accomplishments: We have updated our website to make it more user-friendly and visually stimulating, and have placed our yearbook and newsletter online. We will begin giving members the option of receiving these online rather than with paper copies to reduce our expenses. We have also begun having our Spring Conference by teleconference.
• Additional Information: We are currently in the process of updating our Theory Testing to include contemporary techniques. One of our members worked with MTNA to poll other states to see if this was included in their theory testing. The results were that very few states included techniques used in music composition beyond 1900! Virginia will be one of the leaders in this regard. We’ll keep MTNA informed of the progress we’re making.

Thank you—From Alabama MTA!!!
AMTA wishes to express our heartfelt appreciation to the many individuals and state MTAs who opened your hearts and pocketbooks to help keep the gift of music in the lives of those impacted by the tornadoes of April 27, 2011. Individuals as well as MTAs from Louisiana, Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi, Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas and Kentucky, combined with a $5000 matching gift from the MTNA Foundation, have given over $13,000 to help students and teachers continue studying and teaching music during the 2011-2012 year.
Thanks to the many contributions from across the country, students suffering from the financial impact of the storms have been able to continue lessons when they would not have been able to otherwise. Lessons have been subsidized, allowing teaching income to continue rather than being lost. Much of the music that was lost or destroyed has been replaced. Below is a note from a teacher sharing the impact that the generosity of so many has had on her studio:
I want to take this opportunity to offer my sincere THANKS to all teachers who have contributed in order to help fellow teachers maintain their present studios. Words cannot adequately express my appreciation for all of the donations from around the globe! My studio has been directly affected by the April 27th tornado which tore through Pleasant Grove, Alabama; destroying both my home and many of the homes of my students. So many needs have been met and continue to be met through the generosity of fellow music teachers! If it were not for the sacrificial giving of these teachers, my studio would not exist today. Please know that through these donations, lives will be changed forever. This is not simply because of the availability for my students to be able to afford to continue their music studies, but also because of the opportunity to help these students to heal emotionally from such a devastating event in their lives. As we all know, the making of music is not only a mental and physical endeavor, but an emotional one as well.
Again, I THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! May you all be truly blessed for your efforts!
Juliann Haley Pleasant Grove
In her writing, Juliann also stated that “the emotional toll this event has taken on each individual has been much greater than any physical one. Many children have begun and continue to be counseled about their fears, etc. Many families have continued to struggle with financial difficulties brought about by this devastating event.... To this date, so many are still not back into a home in Pleasant Grove but are displaced throughout the Birmingham metro area, and yet there is daily evidence of more and more rebuilding of both lives and homes...brick by brick and heart by heart.”
If you know of teachers or students who continue to be affected by the storms and may not be aware of AMTA’s assistance program, please put them in touch with AMTA President Cynthia MacCrae, cmaccrae@montevallo.edu, 205-665-5445.
